Summer Series: 10 Self-Care Tips for The Summer
June has come and gone and now we are in truly into the thick of the summer. July is the BEST month in case a reminder was needed. The summer is the perfect time to refresh and rejuvenate your self-care routine. The longer days and warmer weather provide a great opportunity to focus on your physical and emotional health. Here are ten self-care tips to help you make the most of the summer months.
1. Embrace Outdoor Activities
Summer is a great time to enjoy outdoor activities. Spending time in nature can significantly boost your mental well-being. Consider taking a long walk in a nearby town or park, engaging in physical activities like yoga classes or hikes, or simply enjoying beach days with friends. The fresh air and increased blood flow from physical activity are wonderful ways to improve your overall health. 45 minute walks have been my GO TO!
2. Stay Hydrated
Hydration is crucial, especially in the summer heat. Carrying a water bottle with you and drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help maintain your energy levels and prevent dehydration. Adding fresh fruits like watermelon and cucumber to your diet can also keep you hydrated while providing essential vitamins and minerals.

3. Practice Mindfulness
Summer is an ideal time to practice mindfulness and be present in the moment. Whether it’s through deep breathing exercises, meditation, or simply taking time to appreciate your surroundings, mindfulness can reduce stress levels and enhance your mental well-being. Mindfulness is a form of self-care that helps you stay grounded and focused, improving your emotional health. If you’re like me and sometimes find yourself hitting the ground running, allow yourself to be still even if it just for a moment. Small steps lead to habits!
4. Protect Your Skin
Taking care of your skin during the summer months is essential. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding excessive sun exposure. Incorporating hyaluronic acid into your skincare routine can help keep your skin hydrated and prevent dry skin caused by the summer heat.

5. Enjoy Seasonal Produce
Summer offers a variety of fresh, seasonal produce that can enhance your diet. Visiting a local market (Farmer’s Markets too) or grocery store to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables is a great idea. Seasonal produce not only tastes better but also provides essential nutrients that support a healthy lifestyle. Trying out new recipes with these ingredients can also be a fun way to spend your free time. Honestly, just trying new recipes in general is always fun!
6. Prioritize Sleep
Getting enough sleep is crucial for maintaining good mental and physical health. The longer days and increased social time during the summer can disrupt your circadian rhythms. Make sure to establish a consistent sleep schedule and create a relaxing bedtime routine to ensure you get a good night’s sleep. Practices like taking hot showers or reading a book before bed can help you unwind.
7. Incorporate Physical Activity
Regular physical activity is important for both physical and mental well-being. Summer provides more opportunities for outdoor exercise, which can be more enjoyable and motivating. Whether it’s a daily routine of morning jogs, evening bike rides, or joining a local sports team, staying active can help maintain your physical health and boost your mood.

8. Limit Screen Time
While it’s tempting to spend time on social media, especially during the summer break, it’s important to limit screen time to avoid negative impacts on your mental health. Instead, focus on self-care activities that don’t involve screens. Engaging in a new hobby, reading a book, or spending quality time with loved ones are great ways to take care of your mental health.
9. Pamper Yourself
Taking time to pamper yourself is an essential part of self-care. Indulge in activities that make you feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Consider using face masks, taking bubble baths, or giving yourself a manicure. These small acts of self-care can significantly improve your emotional health and help you feel more connected to your own needs.

Spending time with loved ones and building new relationships can provide a sense of belonging and support, which is crucial for mental health.
Additional Tips and Considerations
Practice Self-Care Regularly
Self-care should be an ongoing practice, not just something you do during the summer. Integrating these tips into your daily routine can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the rest of the year.
Listen to Your Body
Pay attention to your body’s needs and adjust your self-care practices accordingly. Whether it’s taking a break when you feel overwhelmed or pushing yourself to try a new physical activity, listening to your body can help you stay balanced and healthy.
Explore New Activities
Summer is a great time to explore new self-care activities. Whether it’s picking up a new hobby, trying out different types of self-care practices, or visiting a new place, being open to new experiences can enhance your self-care routine and overall well-being.
Keep a Self-Care Journal
Documenting your self-care journey can be a helpful way to track your progress and reflect on what works best for you. Consider keeping a self-care journal where you write about your experiences, challenges, and successes. This practice can provide insights and motivation to continue prioritizing your well-being.
Be Kind to Yourself
Remember to be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion. It’s easy to be hard on ourselves, especially when we have a busy schedule or face challenges. Acknowledge your efforts and celebrate small victories. Being gentle with yourself is a crucial part of effective self-care.

These activities allow you to focus on the present moment and can be a wonderful way to reduce stress. You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy the benefits of creativity; the process itself is a form of self-care.
Plan a Day Trip
Planning a day trip to a nearby town or natural site can be a refreshing change of pace. Exploring new places, enjoying the scenery, and taking a break from your daily routine can significantly enhance your mental and emotional well-being. Don’t forget to pack a water bottle, sunscreen, and a healthy snack to stay energized throughout your adventure.
Host a Self-Care Day with Friends
Sharing self-care practices with friends can be a delightful way to spend your free time.
