Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan, for a much-needed well-being trip that allowed me to reset, recharge, and reconnect with myself. As I explored the wellness offerings of West Michigan, I realized this wasn’t just a vacation—it was the starting line of a lifelong journey toward holistic wellness. Known for its vibrant food scene and as “Beer City USA,” Grand Rapids might not immediately strike you as a wellness destination. This trip to West Michigan wasn’t just about sightseeing; it was about healing, growth, and embracing a holistic approach to self-care.
I extended a work trip to Grand Rapids because I wanted to experience its unique wellness programs and evidence-based practices, as well as explore the Great Lakes region. This journey wasn’t just a short break; it felt like the first step in a longer wellness journey that I plan to continue.
Day 1: Arriving & Setting Intentions
From the moment I arrived at the Amway Grand Plaza, I knew I was in for a great experience. This luxurious hotel, located in downtown Grand Rapids, serves as a sanctuary for anyone looking to escape the daily grind and focus on their mental and physical health. The front desk staff welcomed me with a calming energy that set the tone for my entire stay. The woman at the desk was so kind and she gave me a room with the Grand River view. My final two days at stayed at the AC Hotel and it was the type of vibe that I love!
After checking in, I immediately set my intentions for the trip: rest, reflection, and rejuvenation. I sat down with my journal, focusing on stress management and how to align my actions with my long-term wellness goals. By taking a holistic approach—addressing my mind, body, and spirit—I knew I would get the most out of this experience.
For dinner, I indulged in the vibrant food Grand Rapids is known for, nourishing my body with locally sourced, nutrient-rich meals. The city’s focus on nutrition education is apparent in its many farm-to-table restaurants (I got to eat at Little Bird), and I took this opportunity to enjoy both delicious and healthful meals that supported my well-being.
Day 2: Exploring Grand Rapids Wellness Scene
I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to dive deeper into my wellness journey. First, I visited Madcap Coffee in downtown Grand Rapids, a local gem perfect for starting the day with intention. As I sipped my coffee, I reflected on how important mental health is in any well-being routine. The atmosphere of Madcap allowed me to relax, finish up my school work, journal, and mentally prepare for the day ahead.
Next, I explored some of the city’s unique art offerings. Grand Rapids has plenty to offer when it comes to physical wellness, from fitness classes at local studios to outdoor recreation activities. The city is surrounded by miles of trails, making it a haven for nature lovers. I decided to go for a long walk along downtown, which provided not only physical activity but also a chance to clear my mind. Walking is known to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety, and I found that my mood lifted as I immersed myself in the city.
Later, I treated myself to a visit to a wellness spa, which included a massage therapy session. Grand Rapids is home to some of the most skilled massage therapists, and this experience was nothing short of transformative. The massage helped to release tension, further supporting my journey toward stress management. It was inspiring to see how Grand Rapids caters to a broad spectrum of wellness needs.
That afternoon, I headed to Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, one of the most beautiful spots in West Michigan. The park offers plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities, including miles of walking trails that encourage both physical and mental relaxation. It was a DREAM! Very hot, but enjoyed the experience. As I walked through the gardens, I couldn’t help but feel at peace. Nature has a way of reminding us of life’s simplicity, and spending time outdoors is one of the best ways to support mental health.
