“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.”
– John Lubbock
Today is the official day of the Summer aka the longest day of the year. As a July baby, I love the “summa-time” just miss me with the Texas HEAT. For some, this season might be a time of rest and relaxation. For others it may be a time to travel, go on roadtrips/adventures, and explore. I am definitely a mixture of both. Give me rest/exploration and I’m good.
Recently, I had the opportunity to grab one of my favorite magazines which is the Magnolia Journal via Joanna Gaines. This magazine comes out four times a year, with a specific theme. For summer 2023 Joanna states, “Let this be a summer you savor.”
Savor means to have an experience, to delight in, to enjoy. In order to savor whatever is in front of you, you have to allow yourself to linger. To breathe it in.
>
“The way to develop the habit of savoring is to pause when something is beautiful and good and catches our attention – the sound of rain, the look of the night sky – the glow in a child’s eyes, or when we witness some kindness. Pause… then totally immerse in the experience of savoring it”
Let’s face it – our world capitalizes on rushing and being busy. As someone who does enjoy a level of planning, I constantly have to reset and allow myself to BE in the moment. There are things we cannot rush and no level of productivity can compare to a random moment we get to savor. In the words of Joanna Gaines, I know I’ve missed savoring a worthy moment because I was busy planning a perfect one.” Me too Joanna, me too.
Last year I felt like the summer escaped me in the midst of all the planning. This summer it will be doing things differently.
Things I want to savor?
cherishing old friendships and embracing new ones
a pop of color, linen shirts and denim shorts
hot days, ice cream and outshine popsicles
day parties and live music
game nights, house parties and shared recipes
pilates bawdy awdy awdddyyy 🙂
birthdays, parties, celebrations and love
quiet luxury
God’s love, church home and new community
I hope this summer is one for the books for you. I hope you savor your loved ones, friends, family, and everything in between. I hope you make room to give and receive. And as ALWAYS I hope you experience God in a deeper way. That is a forever goal.
